If you are looking to attend a project management conference this year, chances are there is something close by that will appeal to you. I’ve compiled this extensive list of conferences both local to me in the UK and around the world. Use this quick link menu below (on the main full article page) to jump to the relevant portion of the year.
January to March 2017
12th International Project Management Conference: Tehran, Iran, 12-13 February 2017
The IIPMC is organized by Aryana Industrial and Research Group and PMI. It will have topics focused on strategic project management, PM techniques, project organisation and knowledge management, and modern developments in the field. They expect over 1600 researchers, project managers, and practitioners to attend the 2017 conference.
PMI Sweden Passion of Projects: Malmö, Sweden 13-14 March 2017
The PMI Sweden is an event with inspiring speakers, professional colleagues, and companies in different sectors gathered with the goal of sharing their knowledge and experience in project, portfolio, and programme management.
Plus, Malmö is a lovely city. I was there for the Oredev conference a few years ago.
SPMI Symposium: Singapore, 16-17 March, 2017/h3>
The theme this year is “Strategic Project Management: Greater Business Results in Uncertain Economy.” The Symposium will highlight strategic project management for better business results, economy outlook and industry performance, and ensuring career growth in challenging environments. Very topical!
RICS and APM Project Leadership Conference: London, UK, 28 March 2017
At the time of writing there aren’t many details about this year’s RICS project management conference. The theme will be Collaboration in Project Leadership, and they are partnering with the APM as in previous years.
If you work in property (RICS is the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, but I don’t think they are known by that name today) then this is a great conference to get some specialist insight into the challenges of that industry.
April to June 2017
Diversity in Project Management: s’-Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands, 10-11 April, 2017
The IPMA and CKC Seminars will be hosting the first International Conference on Diversity in Project Management – yey!
The focus is on gender as one of the biggest challenges in the field of project management (do you agree?). There will also be discussions on other types of diversity including diversity in thinking style and behavioural style.
Sounds very interesting.
Global Scrum Gathering: San Diego, CA, 10-12 April 2017
This conference definitely has a California theme: Looking Back, Looking Forward – Surf the Tides of Change. The focus will be on passion and what can occur when people collaborate. There is a new Scrum for Hardware track this year that will include presentations, hands-on workshops and coaching.
I’m not an Agile expert by an means but if Scrum is your wheelhouse, this could be a good event to get to.
APM Project Management Conference: London, UK, 27 April 2017
APM is always an exceptional event and I’ve spoken at it in the past (not last year, though. You can read my write up of the 2016 conference here). This year’s theme is Making the Mould – Transform, Diversify, Revolutionise. The conference will look at the constant state of accelerating change in the world and what that means for the future of project management.
It is being held at the Barbican Centre in London which is very easily accessible. You do not need to be a member of APM to attend.
International Scientific Conference on Project Management: Riga, Latvia, 27-28 April 2017
The conference takes place in Latvia, but the official language is English. Its focus is on discussing scientific research related to project management issues and to encourage networking between professionals in the industry.
I think events like this are showing how diverse the project management community is. We’ve come a long way since Henry Gantt.
PMI EMEA Global Congress: Rome, Italy, 1-3 May 2017
Three days of professional development with hundreds of project, programme, and portfolio managers from around the world. Daily themes will include global trends and shifts in the industry. This conference will take place at the Rome Cavalieri, Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts.
Last year’s PMI EMEA Congress was in Barcelona. You can get a feel for what the event is like by watching my video diary from my time there in 2016.
Agile and Beyond: Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, 4-5 May 2017
I figured I should include a few more Agile events this year!
The Agile and Beyond conference is completely volunteer-driven and devoted to Agile and product development. Now in it’s fourth year it will take place at the Eagle Crest Conference and Event Center.
The schedule is not out yet for this year, but you can look at previous year’s schedules to get an idea of what will be presented.
eVa22: London, UK, 17-18 May 2017
Brexibility is the theme of this year’s conference that focuses on project controls.
Trust Steve Wake to come up with something thought-provoking and topical for his conference.
This year marks its 22nd year (yes, really!). It’s one of the longest running conferences that I know of. They always offer a wide variety of talks – it isn’t just about earned value.
It always has a unique feel to it and the team make it very entertaining. There is even a candlelit dinner. It takes place at the beautiful Armourers’ Hall near Moorgate station.
PMO Conference UK: London, UK, 7 June 2017
Completely focused on all things PMO, this one day event features expert speakers, an exhibition with PMO products and services, plus the change to connect with other professionals in the industry. It is being held at etc.venues at St. Paul’s, centrally located in London.
IRNOP 2017: Boston, MA, 11-14 June 2017
The theme this year is The Modern Project: Mindsets, Toolsets, and Theoretical Frameworks. This will be the first time the IRNOP conference will be held in the United States. It is being hosted by Boston University Metropolitan College, who themselves are well-known for the PM education programmes.
Women in Project Management Leadership: Denver, USA, Summer 2017
PMI Mile Hi Chapter will be hosting an event summer 2017.
This was briefly featured in one of the PMI magazines and I made a note to find out more. Unfortunately, at the time of writing there isn’t much more to say. Stay tuned for more details and if you are in the Mile Hi Chapter, feel free to let me know directly what you have planned!
July to September 2017
Women in Agile: Orlando, USA, 6 August 2017
This one day event is held before Agile 2017. The #WomenInAgile portion will likely be on Sunday, August 6, 2017. Again, not loads to report on this right now, but it’s something one of our Inspiring Women in Project Management interviewees, Natalie Warnert, is involved with and she makes it sound like an unmissable event if you can get to Florida.
Agile 2017: Orlando, USA, 7-11 August 2017
This year’s event is being held at Rosen Shingle Creek in Orlando, Florida. The Agile conference is dedicated to furthering Agile principles and offering a venue for people and ideas to meet and grow. There will be attendees from over 40 countries in attendance.
PMINZ Project Management Conference 2017: Christchurch, New Zealand, 20-22 September 2017
Hosted by the PMI New Zealand Chapter the 2017 event does not have any details yet, so watch for this post to be updated.
October to December 2017
Dubai International Project Management Forum: Dubai
There are no details for 2017, but last year’s event was held in October and it’s likely to be around the same time. It is largest project management event in the region and is fast getting a reputation for being a substantive event.
Digital PM Summit: Las Vegas, USA, 15-17 October 2017
The Digital PM Summit is one of the best organised and most welcoming events I have ever attended. They made being a speaker and delegate so easy, and the atmosphere was very friendly. This is a good event to go to if you haven’t been to many conferences and are a bit nervous about the networking part of the larger events.
The conference is being held at the M Resort and has an optional Workshop Day on 18 October 2017. There are limited details announced at present, so watch this space for updates. I just know that with the team behind this event that it is going to be awesome.
2017 AIPM National Conference: Melbourne, Australia, October 2017
The Australian Institute of Project Management has their annual conference in Melbourne this year. Details to follow.
PMI Global Conference: Chicago, USA, 26-30 October 2017
The PMI Global Congress North America and PMI Leadership Institute Meeting have combined this year to create a larger and broader event for attendees. It is being held at McCormick Place, which is very close to downtown Chicago so you should be able to fit in some touristy things too if the constant barrage of PM talks starts to get too much.
I haven’t been to a PMI North America event since the boys were born but I would say this is a flagship conference, with an amazing atmosphere and a huge breadth of topics covered. Don’t be fooled into thinking that it is only for people from the USA – there will be dozens of nationalities represented.
International Project Management Day: Online, 2 November 2017
This is a virtual conference with live sessions including 25 video presentations and five keynotes. No need to leave your office or your home to attend this one!
PMO Symposium: Houston, USA, 5-8 November 2017
Save the date for this one, as there are no details just yet.
