Women in Leadership: the new challenges

As this month we’ve celebrated International Project Management Day with a focus on women in projects, I wanted to share this video with you. In the video, Davinia Ankerson, Director of change management consultancy Incite, talks about the challenges facing business leaders about getting more women into leadership positions. She talks about quotas, different work styles between men and women, the problem with how mentoring works at the moment and also about the generational gap.

She ends the video with some good insights into how businesses can address the challenges of a changing workforce – the video is only 6 minutes long but if you don’t have time to watch it all, watch the last minute.

I met Davinia earlier this year and she is a fabulous example of a young female leader achieving great things in her company – and she shares the same view as I do that books are key to learning and understanding more about the world we live and work in.

Davinia makes a great point about the challenges of retaining Generation Y workers in traditional organizations.  For possibly the first time in history, we’re seeing well-established businesses at a competitive disadvantage in recruiting and retaining the best and brightest of those just entering the workforce.  This is the sort of discontinuity that led to the extinction of the dinosaurs – invest accordingly!
